Awards

The following awards will be presented during the conference in the Awards Ceremony Session on July 5th at 17:30h:

  • European Carbon Association (ECA) Award
  • Brian Kelly Prize (British Carbon group)
  • Francophone Carbone Society (SFEC) Young Researcher Award
  • Carbon Journal Prize

In addition, the following award will be presented before the Closing Ceremony on Friday 6th:

  • Student Prizes sponsored by Sustainable Energy & Fuels and Energy & Environmental Science

 

European Carbon Association (ECA) Award

The European Carbon Association (ECA) Award is made on the recommendation of the ECA Award Committee and seeks to honour “Remarkable service to carbon science community” with the recipient holding the respect of their colleagues and “having been influential and supportive towards others in the pursuit of scientific excellence or having made a significant contribution in providing a strong foundation to the community of carbon scientists and technologists in order to promote a flourishing and healthy environment for scientific achievement”. The award will be given by

Professor François Béguin (Poznań University of Technology, Poznan, Poland) is nominated on ECA Award 2018. Dr. Mª Jesús Lázaro Elorri, chairman of the ECA, will present Professor François Béguin with the award at the World Conference on Carbon.

 

Brian Kelly Prize (British Carbon group)

This annual award was established in 1996 by the British Carbon Group in memory of Brian Kelly, a leading authority on the physics of graphite. The award is intended as a travel grant for students and early career researchers with up to ten years postdoctoral experience to attend the annual World Carbon Conference.

The Award Committee of the British Carbon Group has nominated Huseyin Ennis Karahan. The award will be given by Professor Malcom Heggie.

 

Francophone Carbone Society (SFEC) Young Researcher Award

This award recognises significant contributions to carbon science or carbon technology made by a “young”, non‐tenured, scientist or engineer, regardless of his/her country of origin and citizenship, when this work has been conducted in a laboratory from a country whose official language is French, or by a citizen from a country whose official language is French and whose awarded work has been carried‐out anywhere in the world. The laboratory may be academic and public, or from a private company.

The SFEC Award Committee has nominated Alicia Gomis. The award will be given by Dr. Alain Penicaud.

 

Carbon Journal Prize

The journal Carbon and its publisher Elsevier are awarding the Carbon Journal Prize, given for “an outstanding Ph.D. thesis in carbon material science and technology”. The selection was made based on the quality and importance of the Ph.D. research, and preference also was given to thesis research that had led to at least one publication in the journal Carbon.

The winner of the Carbon Journal Prize for 2018 is Dr. Md Julker Nine. The committee has also recognised Dr. Nithya Subramanian, Dr. Youfeng Zhang, and Dr. Jose Francisco Vivo Vilches for a second-place in the international 2018 Carbon Journal Prize competition.

The awards will be given by Dr. Mauricio Terrores.

 

Student Prizes sponsored by Sustainable Energy & Fuels and Energy & Environmental Science

Six prizes will be awarded to the best communications presented by PhD students in energy-related topics or themes within the scope of these two journals. Up to 1000 euros will be distributed between the categories of oral and poster communications and a committee will select three recipients in each category (first place and two second places).
